Chances are you haven’t heard about the Tampa Tantrums. So, let me take a minute to explain why you should check them out. Since 2002, roller derby has become the world’s fastest growing sport, with over 1,400 roller derby leagues found around the world, in places as diverse as Buenos Aires, Argentina, Kuala Lumur, Malaysia, and Tampa’s sister league in Cape Town, South Africa. The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is the governing body of flat track roller derby, with 266 leagues and the vast majority of derby being played by the WFTDA rules set. The Tampa Tantrums have been members of WFTDA since 2007 and have competed in regional competitions, featuring the top 40 leagues, for the last several years. The Tantrums ended their 2011 season placing 9th at South Central Regionals, but moved up 5 spots in 2012, taking 4th place at the 2012 South Central Regionals, and spending a couple months as the #23 ranked team per Derby News Network, making the Tantrums a nationally recognized powerhouse. Now, the Tantrums have their sights set on continuing to move up and competing at Nationals.
While devoting lots of time and effort to improving their skills on the track, the Tantrums also devote lots of time to team building through activities such as team slumber parties, singing before each game, and wearing colorfully tacky “fancy pants’ while they play. Check out their teamwork (and fancy pants) and see Tampa Bay’s best roller derby on February 23rd!
