What is it that makes us human?

In science and in literature — as opposite as the two may seem — this question is a vital and motivational component. In Pulitzer Prize winner Siddhartha Mukherjee’s latest book The Gene, he masterfully operates within both fields, giving us an expert and exhaustive exploration into the history (and future) of genetics, alongside aphorisms from the literary canon and a deeply intimate personal narrative.

To launch the paperback release of The Gene, Mukherjee comes live to the Tampa Theatre stage for a conversation about the intersection of science and storytelling and how he uses the two to explore our most deep-seated questions, fears, and fascinations.

Joining him for the discussion is Guggenheim Fellow Chris Adrian — a physician and fiction writer named one of The New Yorker’s 20 Best Writers Under 40 in 2010 — and Tampa’s own Dr. Sarah Hoffe, Interim Chair of Moffitt Cancer Center’s Gastrointestinal Oncology program.

Tickets are $32.00, which includes admission and choice of a paperback copy of either The Gene or The Emperor of All Maladies.
