SCF Biotechnology Program Open House
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Biotechnology Program will host an Open House from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. West, building 26, room 220.
Visitors will have an opportunity to tour the biotechnology laboratory where SCF professors train students in advanced molecular biology techniques used in both research and industrial environments.
Faculty members and current students will be available to answer specific questions about the profession, the SCF Biotechnology Program, career opportunities and work settings. SCF industry partners and suppliers also have been invited to answer questions about the field of biotechnology.
SCF's Biotechnology Program is designed to prepare students for employment as technicians who work in a laboratory or industrial setting. Students who are considering science, nursing or other health-related fields also may benefit from many aspects of the program and are encouraged to attend the open house.
Biotechnology encompasses a variety of fields and industries such as the development of new drugs and medications, detection of diseases, bio-remediation of pollutions and industrial wastes, forensics, food safety, synthetic biology, clinical testing, biomedical device development and manufacturing, genomics and proteomics, and basic research at the academic, industrial and government levels.
Potential workplace environments for graduates include laboratories specializing in the production of new medicines; environmental quality control; forensics; alternative fuels; bio-manufacturing; biomedical device and manufacturing development; food safety; and industry, academic and government research.
