Redeemer presents ‘Goldberg Variations’ harpsichord recital as part of Sarasota-Manatee Bach Festival
The Church of the Redeemer will host the Sarasota-Manatee Bach Festival presentation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s legendary “Goldberg Variations” performed by harpsichordist Julane Rodgers at 7 p.m. Sun., Nov. 3. Rodgers is a principal musician for the Bach Festival, and is also a harpsichordist with the Philharmonic Orchestra in Dayton, Ohio. The concert is free with goodwill offerings accepted.
First published in 1741 and reportedly written to console a friend during his bouts of insomnia, "Goldberg" consist of one aria and 30 variations. It is considered one of the finest examples of the variation form. Glenn Gould’s 1955 recording of “Goldberg” both launched his illustrious piano career and became one of the best-selling classical albums of all time.
