Crist Chooses Relative Unknown for Running Mate
Jeff Kottkamp has represented Southwest Florida in the state House since 2000, but is relatively unknown outside his district. The choice by Republican Charlie Crist to have the Indiana native as his lieutenant governor is considered a safe move. But Darryl Paulson, a political science professor at USF, says he's surprised.
PAULSON: It is a strange choice, I thought that he might select the African-American female representative from Jacksonville, which would have really been an interesting choice for a Republican nominee to make, and would have had some advantages in helping the Republicans chip away at the Democratic dominance of the African-American vote in Florida.
Paulson says Democrat Jim Davis might be tempted to choose a black running mate to shore up his political base. But he says lieutenant governors influence few voters at the ballot box.
