First Senior Zone Proposed for North Tampa Highway
It's being called a senior zone... and it could mean lower speed limits for cars traveling through it.
A stretch of Fletcher Avenue in northern Hillsborough County is the first zone in the area being considered for the designation.
It runs past John Knox Village, where about 1,000 senior citizens live.
Residents say they have a hard time exiting onto Fletcher Avenue because of speeding cars. Hillsborough County deputies have issued almost 500 speeding tickets in that area in the past year.
Hillsborough County government spokesman Steve Valdez says there are many areas in the county that could benefit by senior zone designations.
VALDEZ: Those people in Sun City Center, remember they traverse their whole community via golf cart. And a golf cart doesn't have the pickup that a regular motorized vehicle does, so special attention has to be paid to those type of areas.
Besides lower speeds, senior zones would use flashing lights and pavement markings to alert motorists. County Commissioners figure the cost to be less than $10,000 to create a senior zone.
