Julie Gerberding spoke at a security expo at the Tampa Convention Center. She says there has been lull in new cases of bird flu in the countries where it first appeared. But if a pandemic were to strike this country, we have the capability to produce only one-twelfth the vaccine needed.
GERBERDING: Right now, if we had to make a pandemic vaccine in this country, we could make enough vaccine to protect 10 million people. Lot of work to be done.
Gerberding says the president and Congress have allocated billions of dollars to jump-start the vaccine industry - and hopefully get to a point where we have enough production capability to protect most Americans.
