During the 2012-2013 school year, Florida public broadcasting stations across the state implemented The Martha Speaks Reading Buddies Program, an educational outreach program that demonstrated noteworthy improvement in vocabulary acquisition and comprehension for elementary school students. THE GREAT AMERICAN TEACH-IN
In November 2013, members of the WUSF Public Media staff visited local area schools as part of the Great American Teach-In. This is a day each year when workers and employees in a whole host of professions volunteer their time in schools to talk about their roles in the community. WUSF staff shared their experience in human resources, audio recording and editing, and education outreach.
THE 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL WITH PEG + CAT
WUSF was proud to celebrate the 100th day of school with our Pinellas County partner schools on January 31st! Kindergarten and first grade teachers received lesson plans and material for a hands-on activity designed to help students enjoy counting to 100 in creative ways with PBS’s Peg + Cat. The schools each received a Peg + Cat area rug to display in their media center, along with a Kindle Fire. With this popular technology, students are able to enhance their educational experience with e-books and interactive applications.
THE ELECTRIC COMPANY EXTENDED LEARNING PROGRAM
The Electric Company Extended Learning Program is an 18-week multimedia curriculum experience designed for implementation in after-school programs and other out of school settings. The content is supported by PBS’s Electric Company episodes, online games, expressive activities, and practice pages. Beginning March 2014, WUSF Public Media will further expand its partnership with the Artz 4 Life Academy, in Clearwater, with the launch of The Electric Company Extended Learning Program there for more than 70 students.
READ ACROSS AMERICA
WUSF was excited to celebrate Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’s birthday, on March 3rd 2014, with our Pinellas County partner schools and area Raising Readers Library Corners. The newest addition to The Cat in The Hat “Step into Reading” book collection was shared with elementary students, and a full blown cat-ebration was enjoyed by all at the North Tampa Public Library. WUSF was on hand with new episodes of The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That, and Seuss themed give-aways and goodies.
FLORIDA PBS LEARNING MEDIA
WUSF, along with other Florida public media stations, is deploying PBS Learning Media, the innovative and extensive digital education library launched by PBS in 2011. Educators in Pinellas and surrounding counties are being introduced to the website and encouraged to register for free webinars highlighting the free service and its newest educational media collections.
