Then & Now 3/16: New Tchaikovsky
Two Tchaikovsky works had their premieres on this date. In 1870, the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture had its first performance in Moscow, with Nicolas Rubinstien conducting. Then, a year later, the String Quartet in D, Op. 11, premiered in Moscow, by members of the Russian Musical Society.
You can hear some Tchaikovsky like you’ve probably never heard before this weekend as the Sarasota Orchestra welcomes to town the acclaimed trumpeter who’s been called "the Paganini of the trumpet,” Sergei Nakariakov will perform on the flugelhorn, his own arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. Concerts run this weekend. Information is online at www.sarasotaorchestra.org
