Bloch Sacred Service and Bernstein Chichester Psalms
General Event Information
To contemporary minds, it seems odd that it took until 1933 for the entire Jewish worship service to be set to music in a classical style. Erenst Bloch did just this utilizing the American Union Prayerbook for Jewish Worship as the basis of his masterwork. The work is widely regarded today as transcending its Jewish roots becoming as Bloch wrote, "a cosmic poem, a glorification of the Laws of the Universe".
Musica Sacra Cantorum presents an 80th Anniversary performance of this suberb work paired with the "Chichester Psalms" of that other famous Jewish son: Leonard Bernstein.
The performance begins at 4 PM with a discussion by Artistic Director Dr. Robert Parrish and a forum of guest speakers.
