Alzheimer's & the Arts
Alzheimer's robs the brain of its memory. The arts allow it to create untold beauty.
Please join us for Alzheimer's & the Arts, the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer's Institute's inaugural fundraising event. This special evening will honor the strength and endurance of caregivers, those living with Alzheimer's and the efforts being made to end the disease.
You will enjoy an evening of artful entertainment, an online auction, hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer and all proceeds from the event will benefit the research, patient care and outreach activities of the Byrd Institute.
The entertainment will include a special performance by nationally acclaimed jazz pianist Lillette Jenkins-Wisner. Ms. Jenkins-Wisner, founder of Lillette's Foundation for the Arts, performed with the Special Services Unit of the United States Army during WWII. For many years she performed at Carnegie Hall in concert for the United Negro College Fund Choir. Other acclaimed performances include the Lorraine Hansberry Concert Series and European Jazz Festivals. Ms. Jenkins-Wisner was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the Byrd Institute earlier this year and will perform with her daughter Michele Carter and granddaughter, Tanya Stargell.
Dr. David Morgan, Byrd Institute CEO and basic science researcher, will perform vocally as well as jazz band LaLucha featuring Byrd Institute researcher John O'Leary on the keyboards. Rounding out the entertainment will be Shoes at the Door dance company made up mostly of USF School of Theatre and Dance alumni.
The event will also feature an online auction with fun and artful items including artwork created by individuals living with Alzheimer's donated by Arden Courts.
One in every 40 Floridians has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Chances are high you know someone who has been affected by the disease. The USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute is a center of hope for people living with Alzheimer’s and their families. Hope is on the horizon as our science and translational research team is closing in on the goal of preventing Alzheimer’s.
